DPF Reconditioning & Cleaning

Restore your Diesel Particulate Filter to full working order — without the cost of a full replacement.

What is a DPF and why does it block?

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a device fitted in the exhaust system of diesel vehicles to capture and store soot particles, preventing them from being released into the atmosphere. It is a legal requirement on all diesel vehicles manufactured after 2009.

Under normal operating conditions the DPF periodically cleans itself through a process called regeneration — burning off accumulated soot at high temperature. However, this process requires the engine to reach a sustained high temperature, which often doesn't happen on short urban journeys.

Over time, soot and ash build up inside the filter until it becomes partially or fully blocked. A blocked DPF restricts exhaust flow, reduces engine performance, increases fuel consumption, and will eventually trigger a warning light or put the vehicle into limp mode.

Warning signs to look out for

  • DPF warning light illuminated on the dashboard
  • Reduced engine power or vehicle entering limp mode
  • Noticeably increased fuel consumption
  • Excessive black or grey smoke from the exhaust
  • Failed MOT emissions test
  • Frequent unsuccessful automatic regeneration attempts
  • Strong smell of burning or sulphur from the exhaust

Our reconditioning process

A thorough, step-by-step approach to getting your DPF back to full efficiency.

01

Initial Diagnostic Scan

We connect to your vehicle's ECU to read live DPF data — soot load percentage, ash load, back pressure readings, and any stored fault codes. This gives us a precise picture of the filter's condition before any work begins.

02

Forced Regeneration

Where soot loading allows, we perform a controlled forced regeneration using specialist equipment. This burns off accumulated soot at high temperature, restoring filter flow. We monitor temperatures and back pressure throughout.

03

Deep Clean (where required)

For heavily blocked or ash-loaded filters, we remove the DPF for an off-vehicle deep clean. Using professional cleaning fluid and pressure equipment, we flush the filter matrix to remove compacted ash and residue that regeneration alone cannot clear.

04

Post-Clean Inspection

After cleaning we inspect the filter substrate for cracks or damage. A damaged substrate cannot be reconditioned and we will advise you honestly if replacement is the only safe option.

05

Refit & Verification

The DPF is refitted and we carry out a final diagnostic check to clear fault codes and verify back pressure is within manufacturer specification. We road test where necessary to confirm the system is operating correctly.

06

Aftercare Advice

We explain the driving habits that cause premature DPF blocking — predominantly short urban journeys — and advise on how to keep your filter healthy, including when and how to carry out a manual motorway regeneration.

Vehicles we cover

With over 40 years of experience across all vehicle types, we service DPFs on a wide range of diesel-powered vehicles — from everyday cars to heavy commercial and agricultural machinery.

  • Passenger cars (petrol & diesel)
  • Vans & light commercial vehicles
  • HGVs & heavy trucks
  • Coaches & buses
  • Agricultural machinery & tractors
  • Plant & construction equipment

Mobile & workshop service

We offer both a mobile service — coming to your location across Shropshire — and a workshop-based service for vehicles that need to be brought in. Contact us to discuss the best option for your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

How much does DPF reconditioning cost compared to replacement?

A new OEM DPF can cost anywhere from £300 to over £1,500 depending on the vehicle, plus fitting. Our reconditioning service is typically a fraction of that cost. Contact us with your vehicle details for an accurate quote.

How long does the service take?

A forced regeneration can be completed in 1–2 hours. An off-vehicle deep clean typically takes a full day. We will give you a clear timeframe when you book.

Will reconditioning definitely fix my DPF?

In the majority of cases, yes. However, if the filter substrate is cracked or the DPF has been chemically contaminated (e.g. by engine oil or coolant), reconditioning may not be possible and we will tell you honestly.

Can you remap the DPF out of the system?

DPF removal or deletion is illegal for road use in the UK under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations and will result in an MOT failure. We do not offer this service.

My DPF light has only just come on — do I need reconditioning?

Not necessarily. A first-time DPF warning may be resolved by a prolonged motorway drive to trigger a passive regeneration. Contact us and we can advise whether a diagnostic check or full reconditioning is the right next step.
